The Story So Far...
2005 is almost half gone and what an interesting year it has been so far. In December I was elected as President of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. Fortunately for me, I had already served about five months as President; I was elected in June of last year when Sister Gina resigned. That little trial run helped me to get used to the position and gave me a good background for this year. Of course, like most anything, I'm constantly learning from and being challenged by my role as a leader in the Order.

In January I turned over the Board Chair position to the capable and skilled Sister Rox!. Having served as Board Chair for two years, I felt a little protective of the position. However, I couldn't have hand-picked a better person. Sister Rox! brings so many great things to the position and has taken things to a new level. After having spent the last several months trying to be both the Board Chair and the President, I was relieved to give up the one so that I could focus on the other. As President I am still a Board Member so I get to be involved in a part of the Order I enjoy, I just have less responsibility, which is a Very Good Thing.

Sister Edith and Nv Sr VivaThe month of February saw the return of bingo, now called REVIVAL Bingo, natch. When Sister Betty moved to Maine, we put bingo on hiatus so that we could give some thought to what we wanted to do with it. After many months, Sister Tilly took on the role of Bingo Chair and has done an amazing job of recreating and expanding on a fun and successful event. Instead of the Scholarship Fund, Bingo is now working with various community organisations to help them raise money. So far we've worked with the AIDS Emergency Fund, Magnet and Stop AIDS, with more planned. Although I've been giving advice and suggestions, it's been nice to be able to step back from this project. And I was really happy to discover that I was excited about the return of bingo; after almost three years of continuous involvement, I was afraid that I would be burnt out.

Sisters Edith and Dana and Donna SachetIn February, the Sisters joined the queer community in supporting the tsunami-ravaged countries by participating in "Turning The Tide", a benefit for the Rainbow World Fund. It was a stellar event that raised a lot of much-needed funds. And it was amazing seeing so many people come together. So much of our work is focused here in the Bay Area, which certainly isn't a bad thing, but it was good to remember that we all share this little planet.

Sisters Gina and EdithThe Sisters attended the San Francisco Imperial Court's Coronation again this year. Last year we attended largely because it was our 25th Anniversary. Amazingly, we had a major presence and nearly all of us showed up in time to walk as a group. This year we attended to show support for one of our own. The new Emperor of San Francisco, Emperor John Richard, is also known as Sister Penny Lane. As far as I know, this is the first time a Sister has ever been elected as Emperor. I'm sure that he will bring the same devotion and drive to his role as Emperor that he brings to his role as a Sister. read further …

Anno Sanctimonialis
Happy new year to everyone. This year starts with a lot of promise and potential in many different ways. The biggest event this year is The Sisters' anniversary. We turn 25 this year and are already making plans to celebrate our silver anniversary with style, drama and flair. In addition to our annual events (Easter, Pink Saturday, Pride, Dore Alley and Folsom), we're planning on celebrating "25 Weeks Of Indulgence". Thanks to a happy coincidence, there are 25 weeks between Easter, our first big event of the year, and the Folsom Street Fair, our last big event of the year. If all goes as planned, we will have at least one event during each of those 25 weeks. It's going to take a coordinated effort involving all of my Sisters, but I'm confident that we'll be successful.

I have been re-elected as Board Chairnun. Serving on the Board last year was a delightful learning experience and I'm looking forward to using what I've learned and expanding on it. I'm also hoping to continue my efforts to improve the Sisters' Board and expand the Order's connections with the community that we serve. I've been reading "The Strategic Board: The Step-by-Step Guide to High-Impact Governance" and "Nonprofit Boards : Roles, Responsibilities, and Performance" in an effort to improve my skills as Board chair and to hopefully come up with ways to make Our Board even better. Serving on the Board is neither one of the more glamourous nor exciting things to do with the Order, but I get a lot out of it.

I celebrated my One-Year Black Veil anniversary in December. My first year as a Fully Professed Sister was a successful one, I think. The Sisters have proved to be everything I thought they would be and so much more. A number of my Sisters told me that I should take a year to grow into being a nun before taking on any major responsibilities in the Order. This was to give me a chance to get more comfortable with being a Sister by focusing on myself. I found, however, that having some major responsibilities (like being Chairnun) really helped me to be a better nun. The duties that I took on helped me to further define my calling as a Sister and the place that I want to hold in the Order.

There are a lot of major goals for this year; goals for the Order as a whole, for the Board and for myself as a Sister. However, I've tried to be careful about what I've taken and am going to work on my skills at sharing responsibilities. I'm looking forward to a magical year of delicious, guilt-free indulgence. May your year be the same!

The Bad News...
At our general meeting, one of my Sisters announced that she has lung cancer. She is going in to discuss treatment options and is very postive and hopeful about her chances for success. I join all of my Sisters in sending mad, phat, crazy healing energy her way.

And the Good News...
So I'm a Big Sister now. For those of you who are not familiar with the process of becoming a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, there are four levels: Aspirant, Postulant, Novice and Fully Professed or Black Veil. Each level has progressively more responsibility and requires a greater commitment. Fully Professed, as the name indicates, is the last stage, although we believe that learning how to be a Sister never stops.

When you become a Postulant, you have to pick two Sisters to be your sponsors or Big Sisters. These Sisters help guide you through the process and act as your advocate within the Order. One of our new Aspirants has asked me to be hir Big Sister; of course I said yes. I'm still dead set against being anybody's Mother (our name for the Sister who sponsors you as a Novice), though.

My Little Sister is smart and sassy and oh so pretty. In fact, she's so pretty that I've threatened to push him down on the street on several occasions. So far, the thing that's impressed me most about her was his reason for asking me to be hir Big Sister. "I'm a know-it-all," she says, "I want to know everything about being a Sister. You strike me as being a know-it-all too, so I think you would be a good person to learn from." Did I mention that he was sassy?
